Data Sharing & National Data Opt‑Out

How we use your information

Sunlight Group Practice is committed to protecting your privacy and ensuring your information is used appropriately, safely, and lawfully.

We handle your data in line with:

  • Data Protection Act 2018
  • UK GDPR
  • NHS confidentiality rules
  • Caldicott Principles

GDPR – what it means for you

Under data protection law, you have the right to know how your personal information is used.

The key principles require organisations to ensure your information is:

  • processed lawfully, fairly and transparently
  • collected for clear and lawful purposes
  • limited to what is necessary
  • accurate and kept up to date
  • stored securely
  • kept only for as long as necessary

You also have rights over your information, including:

  • being informed about how your data is used
  • accessing your data
  • asking for inaccuracies to be corrected
  • restricting or objecting to certain uses
  • moving your data to another provider (data portability)
  • raising concerns with the Information Commissioner’s Office

For more details about how the NHS uses data, visit NHS England – Your Data.

How information is shared across the NHS

NHS organisations share information to support your direct care.

Your information may also be used to help:

  • improve services
  • plan care
  • maintain safety
  • support approved research

Where possible, data is anonymised so you cannot be identified.

You can choose whether your confidential patient information is used for research and planning.
To change your choice, visit NHS – Your Data Matters.

Summary Care Record (SCR)

A Summary Care Record is an electronic summary of:

  • medicines you take
  • allergies
  • adverse reactions

It helps clinicians provide safe care, especially in emergencies or when your GP surgery is closed.

Only authorised healthcare professionals involved in your care can see it.

You can opt out at any time. Ask at reception for an SCR opt‑out form.

Call Recording

We record incoming and outgoing calls to:

  • support staff training
  • monitor service quality
  • ensure patient and staff safety

Recordings are stored securely and only accessed by authorised management staff.

They are kept in line with data protection and NHS records retention rules.

If you prefer not to have your call recorded, please tell us at the start of the call.
We will do our best to accommodate this, although a permanent opt‑out is not possible.
